Job Description

Library Assistant at the Historical Society Library

Part-time 24 hours per week
** Tuesday, Wednesday, and alternating Friday and Saturday, 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Assist the librarians at the reference desk by opening and closing the library, registering patrons, answering reference questions, retrieving and shelving library materials (including, but not limited to books, pamphlets, clipping files, maps, manuscript collections, bound newspapers, and large atlases), processing photocopy orders, aiding patrons with computers and microfilm readers, and maintaining desk statistics.

Responsible for checking in, routing, and shelving incoming magazines and journals. May also assist with the processing of library materials sent to the bindery. Depending upon level of knowledge, the library assistant may also respond to some reference correspondence. Other duties as assigned.


Education/Qualification Required

** At least two years of college preferred
** Familiarity with library procedures strongly preferred
** Knowledge of Cincinnati history strongly preferred

... Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word, Excel and Outlook) and ability to search the Internet effectively.
... Attention to detail required.
... Must be able to retrieve library materials from shelves as low as floor level to shelves up to 6 1/2 feet from the floor (with the aid of a step stool or ladder). Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
